We have explored how the freedoms and homelands of Native Americans have been affected over time. Click through the various time periods to see how life has changed for Native Americans since before European contact and take a look at what the future may look like for this group of people.
Through our research, we looked at the last 500 years of Native American's land, specifically emphasizing the slow decay of their land holdings from the entirety of North America to small, isolated reservations. Our website depicts how their land and rich culture and heritage once was before the arrival of Europeans. As Europeans moved in, their land was taken with violence between the newcomers and Natives. When the United States established itself as a country, the government used legislation to move Native Americans away into their respective reservations. In the 1900's, the Native American population reached an all time low, when they were most confined to small reservations.
Despite all of the hardships that Native Americans have endured, there is still hope for them. They have some small self-ruling governments and, when looking at recent statistics, one can see that they are gaining more political influence and an increase in their population. Life is certainly not perfect but there is hope in their future.
